The short answer: Four free senior expos are coming up in Florida this November: Orlando on November 2, Jacksonville on November 4 and 5, Hollywood on November 9 and Sarasota on November 17. They bring dozens of local businesses and organizations under one roof, and several offer free health screenings and prize drawings. They are a good place to collect information in the weeks before Medicare Open Enrollment ends on December 7.

What to Expect at Each Expo

  • Orlando: the organizer lists free health screenings, free refreshments and prize drawings. Topics include Medicare, assisted living, mobility, veterans benefits, hearing, insurance, home care, financial planning and legal help. Preregistering enters you in the drawing. • Jacksonville: exhibitors across healthcare, wellness, financial planning, travel and community resources. (Source: event listing.)
  • Hollywood: local organizations that help seniors and their families, with prize drawings, refreshments and health screenings. (Source: Senior Expo USA listing.)
  • Sarasota: up to 60 local businesses and organizations, hourly bingo and raffles, and information on senior living, housing and care options. It is aimed at adults 55 and older, caregivers and families. RSVP is encouraged but not required. (Source: Florida Penguin Productions.)

How to Get the Most Out of an Expo

  1. Bring a short list of questions about Medicare, home care, housing or costs.
  2. Bring a bag and a pen, and write down names and phone numbers as you go.
  3. Remember that exhibitors are businesses. Many want to tell you about their services. It is fine to take a brochure and say you will think about it.
  4. Protect your numbers. You do not need to share your Social Security or Medicare number to enter a drawing or pick up information.
  5. Do not decide on the spot. Compare options at home, or ask a free counselor to review them.
