Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is a nonprofit law firm, founded in 1937, that gives free civil legal help to people with low incomes in 17 North Florida counties, including Duval, Clay, Nassau, St. Johns and Alachua.
Its elder law work serves people over 60 on matters such as advance directives, guardianship, wills, elder abuse, grandparents raising grandchildren, and Medicaid and Medicare problems. It also publishes a self-help guide on fighting a nursing home eviction. Many programs serve households within about 200 percent of the poverty level; cases are accepted based on eligibility and available staff.
